What Types Of Mange Are There?
There are two forms of mange. Demodex mange as well as sarcoptic mange. Sarcoptic mange can take a lot longer to treat and can be contagious to other animals. Demodectic mange shouldn’t be as hard to treat and can be treated in a matter of weeks.
What Types Of Demodectic Mange Are There?
There are also two forms of demodectic mange, there is localized which occurs in most young pups and will get better with little to no treatment within two to three months.
Then there is generalized which after 6 months of having the demodex problem becomes some what harder to treat. This has occurred to my dog after having it for close to a year. Both forms are treatable but one may require more treatment than the other.
Understanding what causes mange may likely be from a few things. Knowing as much as possible about the mange mites is important later when your trying a specific type of demodectic mange treatment.
What Causes Mange?
What causes mangeis the small mites that burrow themselves into the skin. They come into contact with the mites at birth. Since the dogs are still young their immune system is undeveloped. This makes it harder to fight the mange. When the immune system is weak the body becomes more vulnerable to diseases. You should know some dogs are more susceptible than others.
Different breeds of dogs have a higher chance of dealing with the mites and can always be certain to have them. Purebreds and mixed dogs can get the mange just as easy. There are about 6 breeds of dogs that are likely to get the mange more than any other breed.
These include: Afghan Hound, American Staffordshire Terrier, Beagle, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Chihuahua. These along with many others have a higher chance of getting demodectic mange. Before the problem gets out of hand you should treat it as soon as you can.
What Are Treatments For Mange?
There are many demodectic mange treatments available. The main thing to remember is that the immune system is what ultimately will be the beneficial aspect to getting rid of the mange.
You can try different chemicals or ointments such as amitraz or mitaban but these do come with a risk since they are chemicals. Part of demodectic mange treatment is refraining your dog from scratching, biting or licking areas of infestation. This only makes it worse for your dogs condition.
Another part of treatment is proper diet as well exercise and plays a major role in a successful treatment. You have a good chance of getting over this mite problem as long as you’re aware and informed about dog mange.
